Valencia – Avant-Garde City
The capital of the province of Valencia stretches along golden beaches. Spain’s third largest city is much more than a place to idle in the constant sunshine. In lively avant-garde Valencia classic monuments blend harmoniously with daring contemporary architecture.
Stroll in the streets of the town, enjoying the shady patios, the liveliness of the many traditional placetas and the character of the Plaza Reina. The Middle Ages left magnificent monuments, such as the Gothic cathedral with its octagonal tower and the beautiful city gates.
Admire the blue domes of the churches, the old silk exchange, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a host of cultural institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts with its collection of paintings by El Greco, Velázquez, Murillo and Goya.
Step into the present in the modern part of the town. Indulge in a blend of tastes and aromas in the amazing Mercado Central with its beautiful metal structure, where you can sample some of the culinary marvels from the birthplace of paella. Take a relaxing ramble through the immense municipal park and admire the futuristic architecture of the City of Arts and Sciences.
The charm of the interland
And to get away from it all, just head to the beautiful beaches beyond the port. Around the city the verdant countryside is dotted with pretty villages and castles. To the north Sagunto boasts Roman Moorish battlements as well as Roman defenses and the classic amphitheater at the foot of the impressive citadel. Rice fields lie southward near the seaside resort of Cullera on the Costa Blanca. The old town of Jávea, an important fishing port, will hold you under its spell and a little further on you will come to Cabo de Sants Antonio a beautiful protected site in the Del Montgo Nature Reserve. Beyond Altea, the mountains start their plunge into the sea. For action, fiestas and night life, head further south to the popular resorts of Benidorm and Vila Joiosa. And nature lovers can enjoy hiking in the Sierra de Aitana a bit inland. The park is 1,500 meters above sea level and offers spectacular panoramas of the coastline.
