Based near Toulouse, the Sigfox company, specialising in the IoT (Internet of Things) was born in 2009, on the initiative of two engineers and signal enthusiasts. It is the first IoT (Internet of Things) network to be set up.
Sigfox has created a long-range, low-speed network which allows reduced-size data to be sent between connected devices without relying on a mobile telephone. This significantly reduces the energy consumption and cost of connected devices. This innovation was observed in particular at CES in Los Angeles. Although Sigfox was launched in France, the service was rapidly extended to 11 other European countries, and is expanding across the Atlantic. The company is now present in 29 different countries. At the moment, Sigfox is focusing on extending its network coverage, particularly in the United States.
In December 2016, the company reported 20% coverage of the American population, or 100 cities equipped. Sigfox aims to extend this coverage to 40% of the American population by the end of 2017.
